National Electrical Safety Code

This IEEE "regulatory product" sets the standard of care for construction, operation and maintenance of power and telecommunication infrastructure and overlaps in significant areas with the National Electrical Code, a regulatory product developed by the National Fire Protection Association. We advocate in the NESC and collaborate closely with the IEEE Education & Healthcare Facilities Committee. [Comments on next revisions are due July 1, 2020] #StandardsNewJersey

Power Distribution Reliability Indices

IEEE 1366 Guide for Electrical Power Distribution Reliability Indices is a template for exploring performance metrics of large customer-owned power systems.  Respected voices in the IEEE disagree on many concepts that appear in it but, for the moment, it is the most authoritative consensus document produced by the IEEE Standards Association. Its technical specifics may be referenced in power purchasing agreements between universities and public utilities.

Campus Outdoor Lighting

Pedestrian pathway lighting on educational campuses are an important element in the physical fabric within the campus and along its perimeter. A conversion from legacy metal halide to LED fixtures is in full swing and, along with it, a new set of engineering challenges. We collaborate with the IEEE Education & Healthcare Facilities Committee to discover and promulgate leading practice for the safety and sustainability of these systems across the full span of their lifecycle.

Energy Standard for Buildings

Many redlines for new addenda to ASHRAE 90.1 Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings have been released for public comment. It is important for public comments in these addenda inform discussion during the ICC's International Energy Conservation Code Hearings in April. [Comment deadlines run through March 25th]. See our CALENDAR. #StandardsGeorgia

Standards Virginia

During 2019 we are rolling out our user-interest advocacy platform to school districts, colleges, universities and university-affiliated healthcare systems in all 50-states. To lower #TotalCostofOwnership for the emergent #SmartCampus every state will have to be managed according to its history, culture, governance regime, asset-base and network of expertise. #StandardsVirginia

2021 International Energy Conservation Code

From our vantage the International Energy Conservation Code is one of the most widely studied codes in the land; driven by fierce economic and political agendas. Hearings on proposals begin April 28 - May 8 in Albuquerque. We encourage facility executives to fund the attendance by front line staff who have deep expertise in reconciling the competing requirements of safety and sustainability. @IEEECampus #StandardsNewMexico

Electrical Feeder and Branch Circuit Loading Study: Phase 2

The original University of Michigan standards advocacy enterprise catalyzed the funding of Phase I of the NFPA Fire Protection Research Foundation electrical loading study on behalf of the US education facility industry. Now comes the American Society for Healthcare Engineering with funding for Phase 2 on behalf of the US healthcare facility industry. [Proposals for Phase 2 of the study are due March 27th] #StandardsMassachusetts

Coffee

ANSI recently posted a US leadership opportunity regarding the value chain of a product familiar -- and essential -- to campus life: coffee.  We see this as an outstanding opportunity for faculty and students to gain insight into the geo-politics of food supply generally and the subtleties of coffee markets specifically. Fifty-five other nations are participating in the development of this standard. @ICONTEC @ANSIdotorg @isostandards

Stationary Energy Storage Systems

Sustainability workgroups in the education industry are vulnerable to speculative hype about microgrids and the Internet of Things; both a central feature of the electrotechnical transformation we call the emergent #SmartCampus. We remind sustainability trendsniffers that the central feature of a distributed energy resource--the eyesore known as the university steam plant--delivers most of the economic characteristics of a microgrid. #StandardsMassachusetts
