Iowa’s first co-educational institution of higher learning is the oldest of its type west of the Mississippi River. Its campus is affiliated with the United Methodist Church and was the first university in the United States to grant a degree to a woman.  After nearly two centuries, the university closed permanently at the end of the 2022–23 academic year due to ongoing financial challenges.
