College football bowl games originated in 1902 with the Rose Bowl (initially the Tournament East-West game) in Pasadena, California, as part of the Tournament of Roses Parade to boost tourism. The University of Michigan dominated Stanford 49-0, but the lopsided score paused football until 1916, when it became annual—nicknamed “The Granddaddy of Them All.”
