The song was inspired by traditional Scottish ballad “Barbara Allen”; written in iambic pentameter, now fallen into the capable hands of Billy Joel. In the original version Joel sings the melody simply, accompanied by a simple piano backdrop, in a style very reminiscent of a hymn; sung here by the St. Alban’s choir in St. Alban’s cathedral.
