In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, hundreds of thousands of Finns emigrated to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (the “Sauna Belt”). Along the foodway thus created was an oat porridge — cooked on the stove — with milk, topped with butter, sugar, jam, fresh berries (blueberries, lingonberries, strawberries), or cinnamon.
