Radon, et al

Radon is a colorless, odorless, radioactive gas that poses a significant health hazard in school buildings. Formed from the natural decay of uranium in soil and rock, radon can seep into buildings through cracks and gaps in foundations. Prolonged exposure to elevated radon levels increases the risk of lung cancer, particularly in children whose developing lungs are more vulnerable. The EPA estimates radon causes thousands of lung cancer deaths annually. In schools, poor ventilation can exacerbate radon accumulation. Regular testing and mitigation, such as improved ventilation or sealing entry points, are critical to ensuring safe indoor air quality for students and staff.
