Partisans of Thomas Hobbes’ “Leviathan” government have metastasized in education settlements; many in land-grant universities. We reflect upon the original inspiration for public higher education in the United States–to “settle” the American West and to groom succeeding generations of farmers and engineers now overwhelmed by battalions of meeting-goers, administrative busybodies and muckety-mucks.
