Grandfather Provisions

A grandfather clause in technical standards (such as building codes, safety regulations, ISO management systems, or engineering specs) is a provision that exempts existing installations, equipment, processes, or systems from complying with new or updated requirements. The older rule continues to apply to pre-existing cases, while the new standard applies only to future ones. This avoids costly immediate retrofits, though exemptions may be time-limited or lost if modifications occur (e.g., expanding a grandfathered facility).
