2026-11-06 All dayBonfire Night
For Thursday, November 5 — Guy Fawkes Night / Bonfire Night — I'd build the Standards Michigan post around the autumn bonfire traditions of educational settlements, then connect them to the fire, life safety and environmental standards governing outdoor fires.
There are several distinct traditions worth representing: British Bonfire Night, American university homecoming bonfires, Scandinavian autumn fires and community celebrations.
The editorial advantage is that a bonfire is both a beautiful communal spectacle and a concentrated example of why safety standards matter.
Bonfires to feature
1. Baylor University — Homecoming Bonfire
Waco, Texas · Friday, November 6, 2026
A particularly good find: the bonfire begins around 9:45 p.m., with students representing all four undergraduate classes. The tradition dates to 1909.
Baylor University
2. Lewes — Sussex Bonfire Tradition
England · November 5 tradition
One of England's most distinctive Bonfire Night celebrations, with torchlit processions and elaborate community ceremonies.
3. Texas A&M University — Bonfire History
College Station, Texas · Historical case
Essential for the safety discussion. The 1999 collapse killed 12 students and injured 27, illustrating the structural engineering hazards of large bonfires.
tamug.edu
4. Nottinghamshire — Bonfire Night and Student Safety
England · November 2026
A current example linking university student affairs, police, fire services and municipal event management. Both Nottingham universities are involved in this year's safety messaging.

Additional school and community bonfires
These provide good material for the Thursday post and weekend follow-ups:
-
Gloucestershire schools — 2026 fireworks events — Warden Hill Primary School, Hatherop Castle School and Sir William Romney's School are among those listed for November 5–7.
-
Cheshire community bonfires — Includes Crewe Lions at Queen's Park and Mottram St Andrew Village Hall on November 5.
-
North Yorkshire Bonfire Night events — Regional calendar for traditional community celebrations.
Safety standards and technical references
Reference Standards Michigan angle NFPA 1 — Fire Code Fire prevention, outdoor fires, permits and enforcement NFPA 1123 — Fireworks Display Code Professional outdoor fireworks display safety NFPA 101 — Life Safety Code Egress and crowd movement where applicable UK HSE — Organising Firework Displays Risk assessment, site layout, operators and emergency access Scottish Fire and Rescue — Bonfire Safety Combustible materials, supervision, extinguishment and environmental impacts The exact adopted code editions and permit requirements depend on the jurisdiction. The UK HSE guidance is especially useful because it connects bonfire structure, overhead electrical lines, crowd separation and emergency planning.
HSE+1
My suggested lead is Baylor University. Its November 6 event is timely, visually appealing and rooted in a 117-year institutional tradition. Follow with the British celebrations on November 5, then use Texas A&M as the serious engineering case study.
That gives us the familiar Standards Michigan progression: tradition → educational settlement → essential safety works.
