It is a challenging argument to make to a new hire from a different state positioned at the upper level of a rapidly changing organization chart: "Continue supporting advocacy for 6 to 12 years so that we reduce our costs -- and the cost of all of our peer institutions -- by 1/2 percent annually". Even though avoided cost runs into the millions for the University of Michigan alone; the cost reduction is far less visible than the cost reductions from lower-hanging fruit demonstrated by the sustainability workgroups. The original standards advocacy enterprise was drawn into a division-wide reorganization; the first of its kind in about 50 years.
