Wyoming’s electric power system stands out for several unique characteristics, driven by its vast energy resources, tiny population, and geography.
1. Massive Net Exporter of Electricity
Wyoming produces far more electricity than it consumes — roughly 12 times more primary energy overall than it uses internally. With the smallest population in the U.S., in-state demand is very low. Historically, ~60% or more of generated power is exported to other Western states. It is one of the top net energy suppliers in the nation.
2. Coal-Dominant but Rapidly Shifting Mix with Strong Wind Growth
Recent data (2024–2025):
- Coal: ~58–60% of generation (third-highest share in the U.S.).
- Wind: ~23–27% (10th-highest wind share nationally; wind has more than doubled recently).
- Natural gas: ~10–13%.
Wyoming has exceptional wind resources, especially in the southeast, and large projects are under development.
3. Not Part of a Regional Transmission Organization (RTO/ISO)
Utilities are largely vertically integrated (own generation, transmission, and distribution), unlike most states that operate in organized wholesale markets.
4. Unique Policy and Economic Features
- Taxes wind generation — unlike any other state.

- Facing new pressures from massive data center projects that could dramatically increase local demand.
5. Resource Wealth and Transition Focus
Home to enormous coal reserves and strong potential for hydrogen, carbon capture, and renewables. It is actively pursuing an “energy transformation” strategy that balances traditional fossil fuels with newer technologies.
