After an academic journey through Harvard University, Georgia Institute of Technology and Michigan State University, Mike landed permanently at the University of Michigan where he graduated in 1988 and worked for the next 34 years as the first full time staff electrical engineer to work exclusively on a campus high voltage distribution grid in the United States. He has designed, commissioned or managed nearly every type of electrical system project while guiding the growth of the UM grid from 40 to 160 MVA. During that time he became a member of the IEEE and became a technical committee member on the National Electrical Code starting with the 1993 Edition. He expanded his relationships by becoming a member of IEEE’s Joint Power Engineering and Industrial Application Society Committee to the NFPA where he continues as technical expert and student mentor to this day.
After leading development of the electrical system upgrade of the $ 2 billion University of Michigan Athletic Campus Mike retired from the business side of the university and moved to the academic side of the University to assist faculty applying for, acquiring and performing research grants, notably for the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the National Fire Protection Association.
He is the author of three textbooks published by McGraw-Hill, numerous IEEE papers and trade magazines articles, co-founder of APPA Codes & Standards Council, Standards Michigan LLC, and the IEEE Education & Healthcare Facilities Committee. He has professional relationships with engineering and regulatory professionals all over the world. He is a registered professional engineer that resides in Ann Arbor, Milwaukee, and Leeuwarden (The Netherlands). He is happy to share what he has learned about getting an electrical engineering career started with IEEE newcomers in the IEEE Southeastern Student Branch led by Sharan Kalwani
