The emergent #SmartCampus is a setting that is less about libraries and classrooms and more about the convergence of entertainment and instruction for on-campus and massive open and online curricula. The  Entertainment Services and Technology Association is one of the first names among ANSI-accredited standards developers that invest in making this kind of economic activity safe and sustainable. The education industry presents a large market for pool, spa and recreational water technologies and facilities.  Apart from publicly visible competitive swimming programs there are whirpools in healthcare facilities and therapeutic tubs for athletes in other sports. Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality

The ASHRAE committee writing standards for ventilation and indoor air quality has released another batch of redlines.  These proposed changes are important because they are referenced into ASHRAE 90.1 -- Energy Standard for Buildings -- and ASHRAE 90.1 is referenced into federal, state and local energy conservation laws. Sustainable cities and communities

As cities-within-cities, major research universities are stakeholders in the policy template that will guide the development of town-gown infrastructure interface in the emergent #SmartCampus. We have been participants in this project since 2014 and collaborate with subject matter experts at other US colleges and universities. Release of exposure drafts seeking public comment is fairly brisk.

Through ANSI, the University of Texas Medical Branch became the inspiration for first global standard for health care administration. University-affiliated healthcare enterprises take note. The high level policy framework set in this standard will become the global performance benchmark for healthcare administration.

Facility Management

The original University of Michigan regulatory advocacy enterprise was catalyst for persuading selected institutions, subject matter experts and education industry trade associations to participate in international codes and standards development.  With a spend running at about $300 billion the education facilities industry ought to be at the meetings where the optimal standard of care is discovered and promulgated.

Elevator Safety Code

Many colleges, universities, academic medical research and healthcare delivery campuses have hundreds of elevators whose design, construction, operations and maintenance is highly regulated by local and state level public safety agencies. More than a few large research universities have thousands of elevators and, at cost upwards of $100,000 per floor just to build them. Energy Standard for Buildings

Ahead of its January 14-16 Conference in Atlanta, ASHRAE has released twenty-four proposed changes to the energy standard that is most widely incorporated by reference into government energy regulations and used by the education facilities industry as guidance for meeting energy conservation goals. [Comment deadlines range from December 16 to December 30].
