Agricultural Building Power

Michigan State University

Many of the 100-odd land grant universities in the United States own and operate off-campus agricultural facilities that require safe and reliable power which pose noteworthy challenges:

  • Because they are off-site they may be supplied by the local utility
  • On-site generation apparatus such as wind energy, solarvoltaic and geothermal systems
  • One service point but with one or more feeder “service” taps
  • Ground regimes that have known stray voltage characteristics with fencing
  • Emergency generators; especially with milking facilities

None of these issues are difficult but they are subtle and worth revisiting in a year in which the National Electrical Safety Code is being re-written.

Standards South Dakota

“The Prairie is my Garden” 1941 Harvey Dunn | South Dakota State University Art Museum

We continue rollout of our collaboration architecture for the cadre of “code writers and vote-getters” begun at the University of Michigan in 1993.  We drill into state and local adaptations of nationally developed codes and standards that are incorporated by reference into public safety and sustainability legislation.

Standards Michigan remains the  open access site but state-specific sites such as Standards South Dakota will be accessible to user-interest code-writers and vote-getters.   Please send bella@standardsmichigan.com a request to join one of our mailing lists appropriate to your interest for #SmartCampus standards action in the State of South Dakota.  print(“Standards South Dakota”).
