The University of Florida is a land-grant university. It was designated as a land-grant institution under the Morrill Act of 1862. The Morrill Act was enacted by the U.S. Congress with the goal of promoting education in agriculture, engineering, and other practical fields. As a land-grant institution, UF has a mission to provide education, research, and extension services to benefit the citizens of Florida and contribute to the development of the state's agriculture, industry, and economy.
