Throwing Stones
Curling originated in Scotland in the early 16th century, with the earliest known reference dating back to 1511. The sport was played on frozen ponds and lochs, where participants slid stones toward a target. By the 17th century, curling gained popularity, with Scots refining the game by using smoothed river stones and establishing basic rules. Curling clubs emerged in the 18th century, further formalizing the sport. The Grand Caledonian Curling Club (now the Royal Caledonian Curling Club) was founded in 1838 to regulate play. Scots emigrants spread curling worldwide, especially to Canada, where it remains immensely popular today.
