Spoon University was founded in 2013 by Sarah Adler and Mackenzie Barth while they were students at Northwestern University. The idea stemmed from their shared passion for food and a desire to create a platform where college students could share accessible, relatable food content tailored to their lifestyles. They recognized a gap in food media that didn’t fully resonate with the college demographic—students who often lacked culinary skills, kitchen access, or budgets for gourmet dining.
Starting as a small blog at Northwestern, Spoon University quickly grew into a national network of student-run chapters at universities across the U.S. and beyond. It was later acquired by Her Campus Media in 2017, which expanded its reach and resources. Each university chapter operates independently, producing content for the national Spoon University website while focusing on campus-specific dining and food culture.
