Before the Bell

Albert Anker (1831–1910), Switzerland’s leading realist, painted children with rare dignity and close observation. His boys and girls sit in village rooms and schoolhouses: reading, writing, sewing, eating, or waiting. He refused both sentimentality and sermonizing. Faces are particular, clothes and furniture described with tactile care, light falling quietly on paper and hands. Education, modest work, and domestic life become serious subjects. The children are not cherubs or symbols but observed people whose concentration and slight awkwardness feel true. Anker’s childhood scenes remain among the most humane records of nineteenth-century rural Europe.
