In April 1925 the University was chartered by a group of visionary citizens led by George E. Merrick, the founder of Coral Gables, during South Florida’s roaring 1920s land boom. Merrick donated 160 acres of land and nearly $5 million toward the endowment. The primary reasons were to create a beacon of higher education for the rapidly growing Miami area and to capitalize on the region’s unique opportunities: developing inter-American studies, advancing arts and letters, and pioneering research in tropical studies.
