Today at 16:00 UTC we refresh our understanding of the technical standards for the timing-systems that maintain the temporal framework for daily life in education communities.  The campus clock continues as a monument of beauty and structure even though digitization of everything has rendered the central community clock redundant.

Most leading practice discovery (and innovation) is happening with the Network Time Protocols (NTP) that synchronize the time stamps of widely separated data centers.  In operation since before 1985, NTP is one of the oldest Internet protocols in current use and underlies the Internet of Things build out.  NTP is particularly important in maintaining accurate time stamps for safety system coordination and for time stamps on email log messages.

Faster than you can say “lost luggage” innovators will be outnumbered by regulators, administrative busybodies and muckety-mucks seeking a piece of the action in the nascent catalog of space standards.   Innovators will use standardization processes (particularly those favored by the federal government) to outflank their competitors.

Space (Aerospace) is not our primary domain but, because academic programs are re-tooling their aerospace programs, we keep an eye on it.  Solving problems related to space traffic management and orbital debris, for example, are hazards that can be solved with the assistance of academia. Aerospace programs have been co-operating with governments for decades and there is build-out of earthbound facilities needed to continue support for it.

This is a new unit on our Syllabus starting 2022.  We will at least poke at the topic (i.e. track the relevant literature) to see if we can be of any help enlightening approaches to making the physical earthbound campus safer, simpler, lower-cost and longer-lasting.   We will start with aerospace research facilities.

    11:00 -12:00
    2023.02.08

Today we explain our collaboration with other like-minded units in education communities in the US and other nations.  In most cases we conform to participation requirements set by ANSI US Technical Advisory Groups but we also have liaison with other universities in the European Union who conform to the participation requirements of their own national standards bodies.

    11:00 -12:00
    2023.02.22

Illumination technologies have had a pattern of consuming about 35 percent of building electrical energy use.  That number has been pressed downward with the expanded application of LED luminaires and occupant responsive controls; much of the transformation hastened by IEEE and ASHRAE consensus products.

Today we run through the development status of these products with specific interest in exterior illumination best practice.  This topic also is covered in the 4 time monthly meetings of the IEEE Education & Healthcare Facilities Committee.

We Have Not Long to Love

We have not long to love.
    Light does not stay.
    The tender things are those
    we fold away.
    Coarse fabrics are the ones
    for common wear.
In silence I have watched you
    comb your hair.
    Intimate the silence,
    dim and warm.
I could but did not, reach
    to touch your arm.
I could, but do not, break
    that which is still.
    (Almost the faintest whisper
    would be shrill.)
    So moments pass as though
    they wished to stay.
We have not long to love.
    A night. A day….
