Its maternal figure—variously identified as Tellus, Italia, Venus or Pax—sits with two healthy children amid fruits, animals, water and vegetation. The imagery joined fertility to the Augustan promise of renewal: Rome endured because households formed, children were born and succeeding generations inherited the settlement. In an age when Augustus promoted marriage and childbearing through law, the relief made family formation part of the Roman vision of abundance and continuity.
