Since Addison and Steele co-founded "The Spectator" in 18th Century England coffeehouses have played a role in the dissemination and discussion of ideas.  The coffeehouses were often referred to as "penny universities" because, for the price of a cup of coffee, one could engage in intellectual conversations, debates, and exchange ideas.
